Frequently Asked Questions

What does "unpolished" mean?
Unpolished means the outer bran layer of the millet grain is left intact. This layer contains most of the fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Polished millets have this layer removed, significantly reducing their nutritional value — similar to the difference between brown rice and white rice.
Are these millets organic?
Yes. Shiva Organic millets are certified under NPOP (India's National Programme for Organic Production) and carry FSSAI, ISO 9001, ISO 22000, HACCP, and multiple international certifications.
How do I cook unpolished millets?
Soak for 30 minutes (optional but recommended). Cook with a 1:2.5 millet-to-water ratio in a pressure cooker (2–3 whistles) or open pot (15–20 minutes). They cook just like rice and can replace rice in any dish.
Are millets safe for diabetics?
Absolutely. All 5 millets in our collection have a low glycemic index (50–60 range), which means they release glucose slowly into the bloodstream. They are widely recommended by nutritionists for managing Type 2 diabetes.
Can children eat millets?
Yes, millets are safe and highly nutritious for children above 1 year. Ragi (finger millet) is a traditional weaning food in India. Our millets can be made into porridge, khichdi, or dosa for kids.
What is the shelf life?
Unpolished millets have a shelf life of 6–12 months when stored in a cool, dry place in an airtight container. Because the bran layer is intact, they are naturally more resistant to pests.
Do you ship across India?
Yes, we offer free shipping across India. We have fulfilment centres in Jaipur, Gurugram, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad for faster delivery. International shipping is also available.
